High school students win DTU RoboCup

Two students from H.C. Ørsted Gymnasiet have won this year's DTU RoboCup that focuses on the development of robots.

11 autonomous robots fought to be the best to complete the DTU RoboCup 2020, which took place on 13 August. The competition offered a total of 10 known and new challenges that the robot had to cope with on its way through. Among other things, the obstacles consisted of driving through a tunnel, over a seesaw, getting a golf ball in a hole and taking a quick ride on the ‘racetrack’ as well as a brand new, and demanding H.C. Ørsted challenge.

The physical setting of the competition was the same as previous years, but the setup was different this year due to the corona pandemic. The competition had been moved from the spring and this unfortunately meant that there were fewer teams registered than usual. In addition, the competition had to be conducted without spectators. Interested parties, however, had the opportunity to follow via livestream.

Winners

The winner of this year's final was Frederik Rønn Siiger and Emil Pfeiffer Kristensen with the robot 'Team Technic'. Both are students at H.C. Ørsted Gymnasiet in Lyngby.

The 2nd place went to 'Calcifer', whose team consisted of Signe and Steffen Colding-Jørgensen.

The 3rd place was won by Frederik Lund Nielsen, Mads Lyngsie, Oscar Laskowski and Sebastian Schifter Schou with the robot ‘EA SPORTS’.

Special prizes
In addition to 3rd place, ‘EA SPORTS’ also received both the Design Prize and the prize for Best DTU vehicle. The Fighter prize went to 'RoboMarvel' with Khadija Marhadi and Muhammad Marhadi. Last but not least, 'Spacy' with Arya Colding-Jørgensen and Hans Erling Hansen won the prize for Best Video.

Difficult obstacle
This year, the track had a new obstacle that included the interaction between magnets and electricity that H.C. Ørsted discovered 200 years ago. However, the obstacle proved to be challenging.

"The level was fine, where all teams present took points, and the winner scored 22 points. This year's new obstacle The H.C. Ørsted obstacle, however, neither team could complete, even if an attempt was made, so it will probably be on the programme again next year," says Professor Ole Ravn from DTU Electrical Engineering, who is responsible for running DTU RoboCup.

The DTU RoboCup competition is entertaining, but at the same time reflects the research into the robots of the future that is taking place at DTU.
